Slackline Performance Comparison


We did a “backyard” test at a local park to compare the three types of webbing on the same setup. We did this to create a “constant rig” while only changing out the webbing. We rigged a 100 ft. slackline with an embedded dynamometer (force measuring device) and tensioned each webbing to the same load. The results were as follows:

1 inch webbing comparison

High-tec (dyneema): This webbing was quick to tension and super light weight at 100 ft. Unfortunately, it gave the us most abrupt end to our bounce testing. We essentially hit a “bottom” at the lowest point of the bounce. The webbing wants to sweep out under the feet. This effect will be reduced over a longer piece of webbing.

Polyester: This webbing was fairly quick to tension and gave us fairly smooth yet powerful bounces. The webbing had a less defined “bottom” and was more powerful during the rebound. The webbing can get heavy over long distances but the low stretch nature of the webbing allows for different tensions and anchor heights to play with.

Nylon: This webbing took the most amount of time to tension but the bounces were super smooth. Nylon slackline webbing effectively has no bottom when bouncing because it has so much stretch. Even at low tensions one can still achieve a bounce. This is the most dynamic of the types of webbing but takes the most energy to set up. It also transfers the least energy back to the anchors when bouncing or taking highline whippers.
